Meta’s push into artificial intelligence is about to face a dramatic shake-up. CEO Mark Zuckerberg is preparing to split the company’s A.I. division known as Meta Superintelligence Labs into four separate groups, a move insiders say could both accelerate development and deepen internal turmoil.

According to people familiar with the plan, the division will be divided into:

1. A.I. Research – advancing cutting-edge discoveries.

2. Superintelligence – focused on building a next-generation, potentially transformative A.I. system.

3. Products – applying A.I. directly into Meta’s apps like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

4. Infrastructure – building the powerful data centers and specialized hardware required to keep A.I. running.

The restructuring comes after months of tension within Meta’s A.I. unit, where executives have clashed over priorities. Some senior A.I. leaders are expected to leave, while others may be reassigned. Sources also said Meta is weighing cuts to the division overall, which could mean layoffs or shifting staff to other parts of the company.

For Zuckerberg, the gamble is clear: move faster to catch up with rivals like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic or risk Meta falling behind in the A.I. race. But the decision also highlights the strain inside Silicon Valley’s biggest companies as they rush to dominate the next era of technology.
